<image:title>Project Journal - Where is Marie? - Renee Nicole Good was murdered by ICE on January 7. A week later, Marie Gluesenkamp had said nothing. When Charlie Kirk was shot, she had a post mourning him up in 134 minutes on every social media channel she uses. We wanted to know why. We contacted her and made our concerns known. They did not want a protest. Makes sense. But at noon on Thursday, the issued deadline, we had seen no statement. So we gathered and we demonstrated. We found out during event that she had issued a statement 20 minutes before we began. We didn't know, because it was on her website. Not Facebook, not Twitter, not Truth Social. So like everyone else, we didn't see it. This was likely the point, or it would have been publicized. Many of our friends are Democrats. Some of those - a small few, but important - didn't like this. Their minds on electoral politics, they were concerned that this protest would hurt her chances at reelection. To some, elected a Democrat is the only goal, with policy a forgotten triviality. They say a Democrat must be elected, or conservative policies will reign. When we ask what Democratic policies she has advanced, they are silent. Worse, we are told that matters of ICE do not affect our community. The latino people of this county are living with a frightening reality every day. A few weeks ago, a guy in Vancouver got run over by an ICE car while he was lying on the ground. Now ICE is killing in other cities. Why not here? What will be done about it? The immigrants we stand with at our demonstrations would like to know. But for many Democrats here, that particular 11-12% of our county doesn't matter. They don't see these people cause they don't go to that part of town. They don't go into Latino businesses. They don't have Latino friends. The people who are afraid of what the masked military police are doing don't count to some - even Democrats. We voted for Marie. We don't specifically want her to lose her election. But she is our representative. And there was a time when elected officials were held accountable regardless of their party. We won't play that game. If Mrs. Gluesenkamp wants to be re-elected, she should not be afraid to speak to her constituents and to deal with major issues. She took the small step of issuing a statement on her site. We do appreciate that. And we appreciate that this happened in response to a threat of protest, as it means she may actually be interested, on some level, in listening. Beyond this remains to be seen.</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - Community Stand / ICE OUT FOR GOOD! - Our biweekly rally in the circle had a little more to it this week. Indivisible, 50501, and a few other national organizations threw together an emergency countrywide ICE protest called ICE OUT FOR GOOD. We had to do something after the death of Renee Nicole Good. Despite the cold weather, this one felt like a summer protest. Our count suggested around 300 people in attendance, all angry over the same thing. And they should be. What happened to Renee Good should not be a political issue. In a functioning society, a murder is a murder. In Trump’s America, it simply can’t be a murder because then it might look like a bad idea to have masked men with guns to go war with the American people. We all know he’s going to get away with it. We know our government is complicit in this. These protests are going to get bigger and bigger. People are angry. They’re afraid. And they will be heard.</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - Protest Sign Painting - As is becoming a regular gathering, we got together at Magpie Books in downtown Longview to paint protest signs. A dozen or so of us had pizza and made signs about whatever was closest to our hearts at the moment - so, mostly ICE. We all had a great time and made some beautiful signs. At the protest the next day, it was rewarding for everyone to get to see them in use. We will surely have many more of these events. It may become a regular gathering the day before a Stand!</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - Pop-up Anti-War Protest - President Bush has … President George W Bush has … Donald Trump has started an illegal war, attacking a developing nation to grant control of their oil reserves to his rich friends. A few of our members and supporters (and friends) decided to protest Trump’s invasion of Venzeuala. We put out the call and joined them. It was last minute and a dreary day, but die-hard lovers of freedom showed up. This one is raw. People don’t know what to do yet. We don’t know what’s going on, fully. Trump’s racism, xenophobia, and general destruction of our economy and democratic values are a daily occurrence at this point. But he hasn’t really done war yet. This will most certainly be a disaster. But we can, if nothing else, add our voices to the sea of dissent. Protests can be frustrating. We don’t know if we’re making a difference, but we feel we must be heard just the same. Cascade Forward tries to provide a frame for these protests, and keep things organized and safe at them. Even if the government will never care, it gives people a place to vent that frustration so we can carry on the work that matters. This protest will likely be the start of a more concentrated campaign of resistance once we see the full shape of the dictator’s plan.</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - ICE OUT - Our first attempt at a citywide protest was a big success! We gathered in four places (originally five but one didn't work out), and each location had about fifty people gathered. The energy was good, even if the weather was the usual autumn meh. What's been awesome to see during these ICE protests has been the solidarity with the Hispanic community. Part of our family is Cuban, and Cowlitz County is about 12% hispanic, but we have rarely addressed the issues of this community in the past. It's unfortunate that it took the Nazi tactics of the current administration for us to realize that, but I'm glad we are here now. We've made some new friends. We've also become more connected with the Ethnic Sipport Council and will be working with them going forward on some big projects. https://www.klog.com/ice-out-protest-classic-hits-100-7-klog-news/</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - Let Them Eat Cake - Another gray and dreary day in Washington, but the crowd eventually filled in. And they were rewarded with homemade cupcakes made by our volunteers Tina, Pam, and Brittany! We wanted to reward the people who have been coming out to every march, every two weeks since April. We were able to gather 475 lbs. of food and supplies for Lower Columbia CAP, Oasis Animal Foundation, and Rainbow Community. We continue to be blown away by this outpouring of support for the people getting slammed by the one-two punch of winter and the Trump economy. And now ICE too...there's not been so much need in this region for years. So thank you all for your continued support! The march was noteworthy in that we had a large turnout from our local latin community. They, and our regular marchers, are passionate about opposition to ICE. We planned a big protest for next Sunday, with some of the new friends we made today.</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - ICE Pop-up Protest - When ICE, the current federal government administration’s masked, disturbingly unaccountable secret police, began harassing and abducting people in Longview, the public responded. A Facebook follower told us he was going to protest them the next day. We told him he wouldn't be alone. We put out the call and over 100 people showed up, in the rain, with hastily made signs, to make their voices heard. We live streamed this one. It was our first time doing so (although a friend of the project does stream all of our marches on Twitch). This was a big success, as so many people who could not be at the actual protest, feel like part of it. Connecting the protest to the world was eye opening, and something we will be doing in the future.</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - Food Drive 2 - The shutdown has ended, as Democrats have caved. So now SNAP benefits will flow again, after whatever GOP obstruction follows. We'll lose our access to health care at the beginning of next year, but at least we can eat. Truly benevolent is this regime. Meanwhile here in the American outside the DC Beltway, the struggle continues. We held a second food drive today and were pleased to collect about 725 lbs. of food and supplies for our distribution network. It feels appropriate to set a goal of 5051 lbs. by the end of the year (fifty-fifty-one). Let's do our best and feed this region!</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - Shut Down Food Drive - On November first - today - SNAP benefits run out due to the current government shutdown. They don't have to, but the president - who totally doesn't engage in gross executive overreach - has decided that the poor must suffer for his crusade against...the poor. Thus, up to 15,000 people in Cowlitz County are going to lose benefits they rely on for survival. So we hosted a food drive. People still came to march but the weather kept numbers down. But the turnout for donations was INCREDIBLE. We collected 2,128 lbs. of food and supplies to distribute to Lower Columbia CAP, Oasis Animal Foundation, and the Rainbow Community. This food drive was one of many others this weekend and more are coming up. It looks like this community has what it takes to survive on its own when government refuses to help.</image:title>

<image:title>Project Journal - No Kings pt. 2! - By some estimates, 8 million people nationwide attended No Kings protests today. Some estimate 3,000 in Longview. Our estimate was closer to 2,200 but people who know how to count crowds said more. Either way, this was the single largest political gathering of any sort in Longview, WA. And it was amazing. The energy at this protest was electric. It was like a Grateful Dead show, a Bernie Sanders rally, and...something new rolled into one. A new kind of protest was on display here. Something at this point indescribable, but something is happening. We're going to keep showing up and see what it is.</image:title>

It definitely feels like change is in the air. There's a will to action, people just need direction. They need to know what tasks to carry out, what roles to play in repairing this country, state, city. That's why it's important to organize. <image:caption>The city council has enacted a zero tolerance policy for “camping", which is, of course, the legal mechanism used to criminalize homelessness. We are sympathetic to the need to keep the park clear, but when the city is also doing all it can to eliminate programs for the unhoused and at risk while simultaneously setting their sights on affordable housing programs, the policy speaks to a lack of strategic leadership. The city council is trying to beat a screw in with a hammer. Economic hardship, drug addiction, and mental health crises are not solved with more arrests. These policies literally create the cracks in society that people fall through. We must invest in working, lasting solutions to our economic woes and offer compassionate relief for those affected by them. Coverage in The Daily News Coverage on KGW8</image:caption>

<image:title>Upcoming Events - Where is Marie? - On Thursday, January 15, we’re holding a peaceful community demonstration outside Marie Gluesenkamp Perez’s Kelso office. A U.S. citizen, Renée Nicole Good, was killed by ICE. Our representative has said nothing. Silence from leadership is not neutrality. It is a choice. As constituents, we are showing up to demand a response. We expect our elected leaders to represent us — especially in moments of crisis. We’ll have signs available — bring your own or use one of ours. Stay peaceful. Stay firm. We demand accountability.</image:title>
